Though somewhat underrated, the late Blue Mitchell stands as one of the finest trumpeters in the 1960s and '70s hard bop scene. His crisp, crackling, extroverted tone sparkled on the albums of Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, and even British blues avatar John Mayall. A session from 1959, BLUE SOUL finds Mitchell cooking in front of a band including bop aces Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, and Philly Joe Jones, and Wynton Kelly of Miles Davis fame. The program mostly consists of bright, earthy originals with plenty of hearty soloing. A delight for classic bop supporters.
