Personnel: Buck Clayton (trumpet); Buddy Tate (tenor saxophone); Sir Charles Thompson (piano); Gene Ramey (bass); Mousey Alexander (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 20, 1960. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Swing-era veterans Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate, both of whom graduated from Count Basie's band, joined forces on two impressive Prestige dates, recorded in 1960 and 1961, respectively. The first of these, BUCK & BUDDY, showcases Clayton's trumpet and Tate's tenor saxophone with the backing of a skilled rhythm section in pianist Sir Charles Thompson, bassist Gene Ramey, and drummer Mousey Alexander. While the music is informed by the tasteful swing the leaders helped forge in Basie's band, the music is never anachronistic. Instead it incorporates ideas from hard bop and modern concepts of group interplay. As befits the key players' past, there is an emphasis on laid-back, swinging groove here, characterized by mid-tempo numbers "Can't We Be Friends," Rodgers & Hart's "Thou Swell," and the slinky blues jam "Birdland Betty." Though the playing is rarely adventurous harmonically, it is spirited and packed with plenty of smooth, stylistic flair. Masterful musicianship and the crystalline sound engineering by Rudy Van Gelder make this one of the more notable mainstream jazz offerings of the era.

商品の紹介

Count Basie veterans Buck Clayton and tenorman Buddy Tate teamed up during 1960-61 for a pair of Swingville recordings. This CD reissues the first one, a quintet outing with pianist Sir Charles Thompson, bassist Gene Ramey and drummer Mousie Alexander. The repertoire is split between three standards (including "When a Woman Loves a Man") and three Clayton originals. The melodic music consistently swings and practically defines "mainstream" jazz. Worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow
