With dazzling improvisation and sweet-but-tasteful jazz-blues licks, Mose Allison evokes images of his Mississippi childhood in BACK COUNTRY SUITE, an album full of masterpieces. Throughout the set he pays tribute to the many different shades of music found in the South during the '30s and '40s, from country blues through Delta blues to boogie. His lyrics and vocal phrasing on "Train" and "One Room Country Shack" recall Delta blues legends Robert Johnson and Tampa Red, among others. Much credit is due to a tight rhythm section. Taylor La Fargue's melodic bass and Frank Isola's eccentric drumming complement every note Allison plays, and "In Salah," an original bebop piece, is one of the many tunes where Allison's trademark piano style is the trio's backbone. With his broad repertoire of musical knowledge and experience, here Mose Allison digs deep into his soul to create not blues, but a very sophisticated jazz album. BACK COUNTRY SUITE proves that he's a musician without boundaries.
