Personnel: Red Garland (piano); Wendell Marshall (bass); Charlie Persip (drums).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on October 9, 1962. Originally released on Prestige (7258). Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Red Garland gets a pretty sound out of the piano. He opens with a slow, quiet version of "Sonny Boy," caressing chords and hitting notes with a deliberate softness. It's a great way to start an album.
Supported by Wendell Marshall on bass and Charlie Persip on drums, Garland moves into swinging territory on "My Honey's Lovin' Arms." His left hand teasingly comps chords behind the beat while his right hand plays a smokin' (but burnished) solo, steeped in bop and blues.
The centerpiece of the recording is the traditional, "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen." Garland plays it with depth, dignity and commitment, balancing hymnal chords with a tightly soulful solo. A very groovy version of "My Blue Heaven" is included as a bonus track, with the trio swinging effortlessly. This is one of Red Garland's finest albums.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
