This 1980 septet recording by legendary pianist and bandleader Count Basie sees him in the company of renowned younger players, including trombonist J.J. Johnson and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. This combination of older and newer schools of jazz makes KANSAS CITY 7 a compelling album, especially since Basie's strong, inimitable presence on the piano serves as a nice counterpoint to some of the more "outside" playing. One of the most beautiful tracks on KANSAS CITY 7 is the ballad "If I Could Be with You One Hour Tonight," which features an outstanding flugelhorn solo from Hubbard. "Exactly Like You" has a big band feel to it (only without the full might of larger brass and reed sections), while "Jaylock" and "Blues for Norman" are straight-up blues numbers. The bonus track, "Count Me In," (incidentally, the longest piece on the record), spotlights Basie, who shines on an extended and pleasantly understated solo.
