Recorded in 1968 at Yale University, this disc is notable for the unusual program of lesser-known works presented by the Orchestra. The opener, a two-part piece called "The Little Purple Flower," contrasts loosely floating pastoral themes with swinging shuffle rhythms. Cootie Williams and Harry Carney solo admirably in the sly groove of "Put-Tin" and the tender "A Chromatic Love Affair" respectively. These are followed by "A Johnny Hodges Medley," which features Hodges' sinuous, expressive alto on "Warm Valley" and steaming up-tempo versions of down-south grit in "Swamp Goo" and the traditional-style boogie-inducer "Up-Jump" before signing off with "Take The 'A' Train." Duke even manages to fit in an off-the-cuff improv on Yale's own "Boola-Boola," much to the delight of the audience. As always, the ensemble playing is tight and precise, matched by the virtuosity of soloists like Cat Anderson and Paul Gonsalves, and Ellington's piano playing, which is showcased here to good advantage. YALE CONCERT is a fine recording, with Duke's Orchestra giving excellent treatments of rare, impressive selections.
