While perhaps not as acclaimed as Bill Evans's two earlier recorded performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival, MONTREUX III, which dates from 1975 and features bassist Eddie Gomez, still ranks with the pianist's finest work. The lack of drums allows Gomez to stretch out a bit and his empathetic interplay with Evans is never short of astounding. Evans is his usual self; in other words, an unbelievable wellspring of fresh melodic and harmonic ideas. The worshipful audience (which roars it's approval after each solo) seems to inspire an extra level of intensity in the duo.
Many critics would agree that there have been few bass/piano combos that could match the intuitiveness of Evans/Gomez (really just Evans/Scott LaFaro and possibly Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock in their best moments), and the work on this record reaffirms that opinion. Switching back effortlessly between acoustic and electric piano, Evans covers as many styles and textures in a single tune as many pianists do in their entire career. Gomez displays all of the inventiveness, feel, and effortless time-keeping ability that made Jaco Pastorius one of his disciples. Overall, MONTREUX III is a great opportunity to hear these two giants at their unfettered best.
録音 : ステレオ (Live)
