This classic live date was recorded at the now-famous Lighthouse, that legendary West Coast hangout, on the same day as a live session by Miles Davis. Here Chet Baker leads the spirited all-stars, including regulars like Howard Rumsey, Shelly Manne, Bud Shank, Russ Freeman, and Jimmy Giuffre, in a rousing set. Drummer Max Roach, long known for his bebop contributions back East, splits the drum duties with Manne. As to be expected with this bunch, the energy is kept high and the solos are free-flowing. Baker is in fine form, although in such a large group he is not given as much of the spotlight as he would be on a quartet date. Still, the crowd is kept on its toes with swinging renditions of tunes like "I'll Remember April," the opening "Loaded" and even a raucous version of "Winter Wonderland." For fans of West Coast jazz, this is a special treat.
