Trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis had both played in the Count Basie Band; but even after their initial stints with the Count, they had another musical destiny to fulfill together, working in a small-group context, which they did for decades. JAWBREAKERS is where it all started, the first album the two jazz kingpins recorded in tandem. This 1962 release finds both Edison and Davis playing to their strengths, blowing concise, assertive solos over tunes that value bluesy melodies and propulsive grooves instead of harmonic eccentricities or outward-bound compositional journeys. Both warmth and sass are in ample supply as the hornmen dig into a batch of original tunes alongside the occasional cherry-picked standard (Gershwin's evergreen "I've Got A Crush On You").
