Late in his career, Basie began casually putting together small groups for the Pablo Records label, naming them in accordance with the number of participating musicians. KANSAS CITY 6 represents but one of these groups. Don't be fooled, though. Basie's Kansas City projects were neither thrown-together jam bands nor the result of a tired old man on his way out.
On this particular album, we hear the legendary pianist/band leader in fine form. Very few jazz musicians create the light and buoyant swing that Basie does. His understated pianistic style never trounces over soloists but offers them the freedom to explore new soloing vistas. On "Wee Baby," Eddie Vinson (saxophone) embodies the spirit of swing, proving that he can play with a great, bluesy roar. And on "Opus Rag," Willie Cook (trumpet) plays subtle, muted leads ala Sweets Edison. But on tunes such as "Blues for Little Jazz," we hear both horn men alighting more in chromatic (bebop) lines rather than blues scales, adding variety and spice to Basie's already swingin' music.
