This 1960 set, led by the tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, swings between the high-octane big band sounds of the title track and "Whole Nelson," romantic, lyrical ballads such as "You Are Too Beautiful," and the cool modern jazz of "The Stolen Moment." Davis displays his versatility with solos that encompass barrelhouse blues, bebop, and smooth sophistication--sometimes in the space of one tune, as on the bluesy "Walk Away."
