A musician known more for his ideas than his actual music, composer/pianist George Russell made several musical observations in the mid-1950s that led to the modal approach in jazz, a style soon adopted by trumpeter Miles Davis and other forward-thinking performers. On '60's STRATUSPHUNK, Russell applies these theories to his own work, leading his sextet on one of its finest dates.
Although the entire band is in excellent form, bassist Chuck Israels (who would go on to replace the revered Scott LaFaro in Bill Evans's trio) often steals the show, particularly on the opening title track, which highlights his bold, resonant technique. In fact, despite having considerable talent on the keys, Russell often lets the rest of the group come to the fore, and is seemingly more comfortable as an arranger and bandleader. Listeners interested in Russell's theories, or in adventurous early-'60s jazz in general, will likely find STRATUSPHUNK to be a fascinating record by an often underrated artist.
