This is Max Roach's first studio session as a leader. Stylewise, these 1953 recordings of his septet and quartet fall somewhere between bebop and hard bop. (Hard bop differs from bebop in its more soulful, emotional, and even funkier characteristics; bebop is arguably more concerned with precision and speed than groove and feeling.)
This CD also represents the recording debut of the great tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley and the equally fine (but somewhat obscure) pianist Walter Davis II. Roach is in fine form on this outing, demonstrating his colorful and passionate soloing abilities best on "Cou-Manchi-Cou" and "Just One of Those Things." Mobley's tenor feature on the ballad "I'm a Fool to Want You" and his own composition "Mobleyzation" represent the saxophonist's superb skill and maturity. It's hard to believe that such fine tenor playing could come from one who was, at the time, only 23.
