Woody Shaw emerged out of Newark, New Jersey in the 1970s as a bold new force in the world of jazz trumpeting. Shaw was influenced by other trumpeters such as the late, legendary Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, and Dizzy Gillespie, but also listened to and learned from John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner and Horace Silver. The resulting style Shaw honed was thoughtful and innovative, with wide, charging intervals and bold steps out of the chord structure.
The four long Shaw-composed cuts on SONG OF SONGS aptly showcase this great player who sadly died in his prime in 1989. The exotic-sounding title track is based on a five-note Indonesian scale, and Shaw builds his solo slowly, gradually working the major/minor contradiction built into this mode. The second track is the more straight-ahead, faster-paced "The Goat and the Archer", after which the set returns to the more experimental realm.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
