Personnel: Jim Robinson (trombone); Louis Cottrell, Jr. (clarinet); Ernie Cagnolatti (trumpet); Alfred Williams (drums). Liner Note Author: Herb Friedwald. Recording information: New Orleans, LA (01/24/1961/01/30/1961). Arranger: Jim Robinson . Although Jim Robinson had extensive sideman credits and was an important figure in Dixieland, he was a late bloomer when it came to recording as a leader. The trombonist's first recordings as a leader came in 1944 (when he was 51), and in the LP era, he didn't record any albums as a leader until Chris Albertson produced some sessions for him in New Orleans in January 1961. By that time, Robinson was 68. But he still played with the stamina and vitality of a young man, and anyone who doubts that his chops had held up well need only listen to this reissue (which contains some of those January 1961 recordings; the rest are on a companion reissue titled New Orleans: The Living Legends -- Jim Robinson's New Orleans Band). For this CD, the theme is the sacred and the "profane" -- the sacred being gospel and spirituals, the "profane" being the blues. Secular and spiritual music both influenced Dixieland, and Robinson acknowledges the Christian influence on jazz with lively interpretations of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," and "You Pray for Me (And I'll Pray for You)." All of those songs receive Dixieland makeovers, and they end up sounding perfectly natural alongside blues items like "Tin Roof Blues" and King Oliver's "Dippermouth Blues." Gratefully, Robinson has a fine Crescent City team to work with -- one that boasts Louis Cottrell on clarinet, Ernest Cagnolatti on trumpet, George Guesnon on banjo, Alcide "Slow Drag Pavageau" on upright bass, and Alfred Williams on drums. Eighty percent of the CD is instrumental, although the big-voiced singer Annie Pavageau (Alcide Pavageau's wife) is featured on "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and an alternate version of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." This rewarding CD is happily recommended to Dixieland enthusiasts. ~ Alex Henderson
