Jazz critic Ira Gitler begins his liner notes for this release by admitting, "There is much confusion regarding the personnel on this date...[it's] entirely possible that the bassist is not Mingus. It certainly doesn't sound like him." For that matter, it's also apparently unclear whether the pianist on the date is Wade Legge or Wynton Kelly. Still, this leaves us with six tunes recorded in September of 1957, along with at least one alternate take of each, featuring Clarence Shaw on trumpet, Shafi Hadi on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone and Danny Richmond on drums.
The date's three original tunes are all Hadi compositions. "Untitled Original Blues" crackles with energy, fueled by Richmond's propulsive drumming. "Untitled Original Composition" gets out of the bop zone with a vaguely Mediterranean, pointillistic melody placed over bowed bass and Richmond's percussion. Plenty of attention was clearly given to the arranging of the standards; in particular "Autumn in New York," which has much of the Ellingtonian flavor of other Mingus work from the same period.
