This 1958 recording was the third of Mal Waldron's four Mal-titled albums (MAL/1, MAL/2, MAL/3, MAL/4). This time out he's fronting a sextet doing a set devoted almost exclusively to his compositions. They stick closer to hard post-bop numbers ("The Cattin' Toddler" is a genre standout) than to the more angular directions
Waldron's explorations would reach an apex on 1961's THE QUEST. The set's one cover is the Harold Arlen standard "For Every Man There's a Woman" and includes guest vocalist Elaine Waldron. Billie Holiday figured prominently in Mal Waldron's early career--he was her accompanist for the last two years of her life--and it's odd to hear his arrangement sensibilities in full bloom around so strikingly different-sounding a singer. The sextet's line-up of piano, trumpet, flute, cello, bass, and drums creates some bracing juxtapositions and textures.
