Personnel: Mal Waldron (piano); Addison Farmer (bass); Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums).
Recorded in March 1959.
Recorded in 1959, Waldron's trio for this date included Addison Farmer on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. The set combines originals and apt covers. Waldron's "Camps Elysees" opens the album with a characteristic mix of playfulness and regal bearing. Waldron was Billie Holiday's final accompanist, and like her, his take on "All The Way" is rich with dramatic understatement. In fact, no unnecessary filigree is to be found anywhere in these 42 minutes. Rather, the emotional bearing of the playing, writing and arrangements are given the spotlight. While Waldron uses angularity in his composing and soloing, he's not nearly the iconoclast of, say, Thelonious Monk. He is, though, a minimalist, exacting the most resonant bearing from the least amount of notes. The density in this music is in the rich atmosphere, not in any layered sounds.
