Terry Oldfield's SPIRIT OF TIBET draws inspiration from both the Chinese and the Irish. Musically, the two lengthy tracks on this recording emphasize Celtic modes and instruments. On "Footprints of Buddha's Children" Oldfield uses tin whistles, uilleann pipes, and other western flutes. This track also features the Children of Chalford Hill School, whose elocution and tone draw attention to the composer's Celtic leanings. However, this piece begins with eerie chanting from Tibetan holy man Phuntsog Wangyal. Also, the use of a Chinese gong invokes the spirit of Eastern music quite effectively.
Like the first track, "Tears for Tibet" begins with chanting from Wangyal. However, this piece quickly transforms into an elegant Celtic ballad. Keyboard generated harp arpeggios begin to seep into the music, and soon Oldfield's flutes and whistles take center stage. After about 12 minutes, the chanting resumes. This is then followed by the sound of children playing. Finally, Oldfield recapitulates the original tune. Overall, this is very ethereal music filled with lots of fancy sound effects, haunting passages and, above all else, lovely flute melodies.
