Afro-Cuban music offers the flute one of its few opportunities to shed its prim and proper persona and cut loose. Here four maestros joined forces in a recording studio in Havana during a three-day session: noted jazz flautist Jane Bunnett; two major forces in the history of Cuban music, "Maraca" and Richard Egues; the former's protege, Celine Valle. Nonpareil Latin jazz pianist Hilario Duran provides an inventive, solid underpinning and works with the percussion section to set grooves that just don't quit, while the flutes soar exultantly above it all. ~ Janet Rosen
