Why Can't We Be Lovers (The Complete Invictus Recordings)

Why Can't We Be Lovers: The Invictus Sessions spans two discs of Holland-Dozier-Holland productions for the group's label, Invictus, where the trio was the driving force and responsible for many of the songs and the overall feel at the label; but their own recordings weren't much like those of 8th Day or Glass House, to name but two hitmakers on Invictus/Hot Wax. They were recorded a few years later, closer to the heyday of disco, and they reflect that genre's influence in their lush, stylish, sexy sounds. This is late night, romantic, mood music, where the sound and feel is more important than the particulars of the song or performance. As such, it's better for background listening (or if considered a treasure trove of samples) than intent listening; which is surprising for such a notable group of songwriters.
