The relentless MUSIC WITH CHANGING PARTS is Philip Glass's first major work. This performance was first released on a 1973 Chatham Square double LP, about the same time as MUSIC IN SIMILAR MOTION, which was something of preparatory sketch. These were the glory days of the Philip Glass Ensemble, and CHANGING PARTS is a dense, churning piece, sounding like nothing that ever came before it. Soft Machine's organ-and-sax art rock was one precendent as was Terry Riley's Poppy Nogood improvisations. But Glass's study of meter and rhythm in Indian classical music gives this music an awesome, quasi-gothic structure--ominous in the looming and booming transitions that appear without any warning throughout the work.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
