Nesler made his reputation writing songs for Trace Adkins, Mark Chesnutt and especially Tracy Byrd (nine tracks, including "Heaven In My Woman's Eyes") and Tim McGraw (his enormo-smash "Just To See You Smile"). I'M JUST THAT WAY is Nesler's debut release, and it's an intensely introspective, mostly downbeat collection of songs about love and loss. Nesler's voice is decent, but it's his emotional delivery and the originality of his lyrics that make you believe every word he's singing.
In the terrific "Used to the Pain," a spare arrangement and an unexpected melody highlight the story of a man still smarting from a breakup, who admits, "The truth is I really can't say/If I'm getting better, or just used to the pain." In "Love Her For Me," the narrator begs his disapproving mother to accept his girlfriend, saying "If you can't love her for her/Love her for me." "I'm Just That Way" paints a portrait of a man so deeply in love that even he doesn't understand his own actions. There are a few upbeat tracks, but overall, this is a quietly satisfying look into one man's soul.
