The Temptations: Otis Williams, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eldridge Bryant, David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards (vocals). Originally released on Gordy (954) in September 1970. All tracks have been digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). This collection of Temptations hits samples the best of their post-'60s, post-David Ruffin work, and it proves that the '60s wasn't the only Golden Age of Motown. The meatiest tracks here are the sprawling urban epics crafted by the production team of Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. On epic songs such as "Ball of Confusion," "Psychedelic Shack," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and "Masterpiece," Whitfield and Strong mix wah-wah guitars, minimalist bass lines, and sinister strings with the Temptations' five distinctive lead vocals to create ominous, kinetic mini-symphonies of paranoia and social commentary. Other highlights here include the Tempts' funk-rock masterpiece "Shakey Ground," a fine reading of Leon Russell's ballad "A Song for You," and the concluding "Stay," which turns the sampled bass and guitar riff from their 1965 hit "My Girl" into a whole new (and equally lovely) song.
