When we last left Judge Jules in the requisite "Let's See How Many Dance Compilations We Can Fleece To The Kids" Clubber's Guide to Ibiza situation in 1999, he pulled very few surprises and produced a quality -- yet tame -- compilation. This time, however, Jules' 2000 installment seems less intent on slogging out a set of solid songs and more in control of creating a tight, banging compilation of significant skill. So smile: the tunes suited for the Balearic island of Ibiza this year are bigger as well as better. Highlights? Much easier to find this time around: Florian F's Terry Gilliam-winking "Surreal Brazil," Burgy's rolling, thunderous "Lochfresser," and Storm's might-be-Ibizia-tune-of-2000 "Time To Burn" are all unquestionable champions. Jules even sticks in another of his pen-name tracks (Hi-Gate's "Caned & Unable"), and once again he shows up almost everything else on this entire set. To be fair, however, one might notice such peaks are mostly contained on the first disc. Because the follow-up disc is peppered with cheese-house like Freefall or gives-trance-a-bad-name awfulness like Lost Witness. Even the legitimately poetic "It's My Turn" by Angelic is marred by Jules decision to use the vocal take of one of 1999's most incomparable trance songs. Still, as far as summer island club culture is concerned, this is an admirable collection of the huge and the obscure. Jules ignores his domesticated 1999 Ministry Of Sound installment and keeps everything in a stream of friendly, hard beats and superior trance. What a difference a year must make. After all, the beginning of the 21st century might show club-land seriously eyeing U.K. garage for the first time in ages, but if this Clubber's Guide to Ibiza 2000 installment declares anything, it's that those always set to get mad on the floor will be safe from persecution for years to come. ~ Dean Carlson
