UK rap-rock ensemble Skindred managed to survive several label jumps and the loss of two band members before at last making a splash on the Billboard charts. Fans of the genre should stand up and applaud the group's persistence, as BABYLON breathes new artistic life into an oft-maligned sub-genre. The inventors of an unlikely niche the group calls "Ragga metal," Skindred combines highly syncopated, complex System of a Down-esque heavy-rock grooves with dub-style beats and dancehall-reggae toasting. On "Selector" and "Pressure," the quartet sounds like a slightly surreal confluence of Bad Brains and the Specials caught in the mosh pit at a Soulfly show. "Set It Off" is a dance-metal raver that's equal parts early-1990s Madchester scene and Megadeth. Best of all, Skindred manages to meld bombastic drums, gut-wrenchingly heavy guitars, and harsh, half-rapped/half-screamed vocals in an uncommonly tuneful manner, making BABYLON simultaneously an invigorating and accessible listen.
