Malik Mezzadri's third opus does not display the same variety as its predecessors, but advantageously sharpens his focus. This time, he dispenses with the many guests who populated his previous output and instead chooses to remain centered on his working band. The recording, which continues to showcase his unique brand of singing, is also an occasion to get a better appreciation of his flute playing, which finally takes center stage. As a two-disc set, this is an ambitious project displaying the two different sides of the leader's talent and including no filler. The first disc is called 00-237 and has the most variety, as moods shift from the joyous "Passage a Vide" to the dirge-like "Alti-Plan" to the pensive "So Nice," which features saxophonist Steve Coleman, a musician with whom Mezzadri has some overt affinities. But regardless of the atmosphere, the compositions always betray the leader's predilection for melody. The second disc bears a title just as arcane as the first, XP-I, but a darker mood prevails and the music sticks to a midtempo pace. Another change is the role given to the keyboards, which are used for accents instead of colors. While the first disc appears as a fine summary of his previous efforts, the second seems more personal and searching. With one exception, the program consists exclusively of compositions by Mezzadri, who displays a newly acquired maturity as a composer along with the strengthened confidence in his playing. This set signals the emergence of an important artist, someone whose development will be interesting to watch. ~ Alain Drouot
