Would any Northern soul fan (or a fan in any genre, for that matter) want to see any more compilations with titles like Ultimate Northern Soul? For starters, no one compilation can come anywhere close to capturing the full depth and scope of the Northern scene, and second, the word "Ultimate" suggests nothing more than a compilation of tried-and-true classics, which runs in direct opposition to the adventurous crate-digging spirit that keeps Northern DJs and listeners going year after year. That implicitly limits the market for Ultimate Northern Soul to newcomers, and in that context, this isn't a bad little set -- if Dobie Gray's monolithic "Out on the Floor" isn't enough to make you a Northern lifer, it's doubtful any of these other 21 tracks is going to do the trick, either, but Al Wilson's "The Snake," Darrell Banks' "Our Love Is in the Pocket" and Erma Franklin's "I Get the Sweetest Feeling" probably have the best shot. ~ Jason Ankeny
