A tremendous success upon its release in 1977 (it sold over three million copies), Barry Manilow's LIVE effectively captures everything that makes the performer appealing. From its glitzy, Broadway-style cover, it's clear that LIVE is about straight-up entertainment, and Manilow delivers with an energetic set that's as big on professional showmanship as it is on tunesmithery. Yet while Manilow dazzles the crowd with uptempo jump boogies and anthemic singalongs ("Riders to the Stars," "Daybreak"), it's his ballads and solo piano spots that stand out ("Weekend in New England," "This One's for You"). Manilow would continue to enjoy commercial success throughout the '80s, '90s, and beyond, but this is a document of the entertainer at the peak of his powers.
