Opening an album with -- let alone naming an album after -- a then-contemporary cover song is a rather unconventional move. But then again, Nantucket were never ones to strive for convention or conformity. Leading off with AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top" set the tone appropriately for what followed on the group's third album. While not as hard rocking as 1979's Your Face or Mine, Long Way to the Top adapted Nantucket's sound for the ever-evolving AOR and Top 40 formats, and found them not sounding as much like other classic rock groups as they had previously. Larry Uzzell is in fine form, with the bandmembers in tow writing and sounding as if they were heavily influenced by Tom Petty's classic Damn the Torpedoes record. The record stumbles at times ("50 More" could easily have been left off to make room for something more fitting), but that's a mere distraction and easily forgivable when listening to the rest of the album. Not their strongest effort, but even on their worst days Nantucket rocked harder than most bands on their best. ~ Rob Theakston
