Put out just before the international moratorium on annually released double-disc mix CDs from the same artists, Roger Sanchez's third Release Yourself sounds suspiciously like the previous two collections. Of course, house music in general and Sanchez in particular aren't known for their full-steam-ahead innovation. Rather, his particular state of house music is like a familiar friend, one who you share a few too many naughty secrets with. There are good times to be had, but the same tales aren't as amusing as they once were. Of course, Sanchez has flipped the script enough to present his two-disc in a preparty and party order, defying the usual party/afterparty convention. But that's no reason to call the patent office. If you can't guess, preparty selects the smooth vein of house, while party drops you right in the middle of a sweltering club, disco balls and superpowered laser beams flashing with every thousand pound beat. And try as you will to act mature, half a ton of kick drum won't let you stand still. So go ahead and dance for a dozen or so hours. We won't tell your boss come Monday morning. ~ Joshua Glazer
