Rosemary Clooney's career took off in the 1950s, with four number one hits and 13 Top 40 singles, along with a brief film career and a short-lived television series. Excerpts from The Rosemary Clooney Show make up this DVD, interwoven with commentary by her five children, her brother Nick Clooney, actor George Clooney (her nephew), as well as her friend, singer Michael Feinstein. Though the backgrounds for studio performances are drab and she doesn't really move around a lot as she sings, Clooney's ability to get to the heart of each song, along with a superb gift at expressing herself on camera with her flawless vocals, make the most of each number. With an orchestra arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle (her favorite collaborator), and on some tracks, supporting vocals by the all-male quartet the Hi-Lo's, Clooney's interpretations of the various standards, ballads, and even the otherwise forgettable novelty numbers easily stand the test of time. Her husband, actor Jose Ferrer, is clearly out of his league trying to sing a duet with Rosemary, though this good-natured performance was done for a television audience and not critics. One surprise is her huge hit "Come On-A My House," a song Clooney tried to avoid recording and detested for most of her life. You wouldn't know that she hated the song as she playfully flirts with her unseen audience in this trite number marred by lyrics with a deliberately fake Italian accent; that's the sign of a true professional, making something out of nothing. Interview excerpts with family and friends are featured between numbers, revealing a lot about a gracious, dedicated singer who put a solid effort into everything she did. Nick Clooney shares a thought from his late sister that she "...always smiled when she had a sad song to sing." About the only puzzling part of this excellent DVD is the brief history of Rosemary Clooney, which discusses a fair part of her career, yet omits any mention of Blue Rose, her historic LP with Duke Ellington. The video source material is very well preserved with no visible or audible flaws of any kind. Any fan of Rosemary Clooney should consider this DVD to be an essential purchase. ~ Ken Dryden
