Saxophonist Rodrigo Amado's Lisbon Improvisation Players -- LIP for short -- make free-form jazz that is the epitome of modern avant-garde music. Lisbon Improvisation Players Live_Lxmeskla showcases Amado's unerring commitment to "total improvisation" during a live performance at the Tivoli Theatre in Lisbon on October 7, 2000. Featuring Amado's Ornette Coleman-influenced alto and baritone sax playing, the group consists of Marco Franco on soprano sax, Paulo Curado on alto and soprano sax, Pedro Goncalves on double bass, and Acacio Salero on drums and sax. Fans of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Albert Ayler, and Coleman will find much of interest here. While there is plenty of "skronk" and atonal group improvisation on Live_Lxmeskla, one also gets the sense that the members of LIP know how to swing and sound "pretty," much in the same manner that Coleman -- even at his most "out" -- referenced the work of bebop legend Charlie Parker. "This Is Our Music" -- obviously a direct reference to the classic 1960 Coleman album -- features an intriguing conversation between drums, bass, and a very "chattering" sax, while the moody "Song for Bluiett" pays homage to free jazz icon Hamiett Bluiett. ~ Matt Collar
