A killer artifact of Allan Clarke's 1970s solo career, Heroes & Survivors: The Aura Records Anthology 1978-1981 shows the Hollies' lead singer in some of the best, most vital pop/rock music of his career, in superb voice from his version of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" (recorded long before Springsteen's own version, but delayed until after the latter's release) to early-'80s LP Legendary Heroes. Although the Hollies never quite found a niche during this period, trying to shoehorn their sound into a disco-influenced setting (a la the Bee Gees), Clarke's solo sides were the equal of the best pop/rock sounds on the charts in the second half of the decade -- indeed, "Born to Run," fine as it is, is only a minor highlight of a superb body of 12 songs (mostly from I Wasn't Born Yesterday) on disc one of this set. The rest is powerful stuff, showcasing Clarke's best singing of his whole career, and it gets better on disc two, where the beat opens up on the driving, soaring "Slipstream," which even approximates aspects of the Hollies' harmony vocal sound. The musicians on-hand include bassist Leland Sklar and Australian guitarist Billy Thorpe. ~ Bruce Eder
