Siblings Adolfo and Gustavo Angel Alba were staples of the Mexican grupero scene throughout the 1990s, with their blend of ranchera, pop, and mariachi appealing to a wide cross section of the Mexican and, increasingly, the American public. VEINTISIETE, another in an improbably long line of hit albums for the brothers and their band Los Temerarios, follows what has become a successful formula (the band were recipients of a Latin Grammy in 2001), with lush instrumentation underpinning lyrics about love and loss. "Las Llaves Di Mi Alma" is typical of the band's oeuvre, with a vocal delivery just the right side of melodramatic, backed by sentimental strings, while their mariachi and ranchera side is shown both in the swinging "Ni En Defensa Propia" and the smooth "En Mi Viejo San Juan," the latter sure to bring a lump to the throats of every Mexican expatriate who hears it.
