Arguably the greatest hard-bop trumpeter (largely due to his tenure with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers), Freddie Hubbard displayed skill as an improviser and interpreter that influenced not only fellow horn players, but also the very evolution of jazz. A fiery player with a thick, hearty sound, Hubbard had an approach to modern jazz that was always exciting and intriguing. A part of Columbia's JAZZ MOODS compilation series, this is a sampling of Hubbard's finest recorded moments. Although the collection doesn't feature his performances with Blakey's group, it does present seven absolutely smoking tracks from Hubbard's successful 1970s releases. Scorchers such as "The Intrepid Fox" and the epic "Red Clay" are unforgettable moments in post-bop jazz, as is the hard-swinging "Theme from Kareem."
