SUMMER OF '78 is an album of '70s cover tunes on which Manilow avoids easy prey like the Philly International "Me And Mrs. Jones"-style material and heads straight for the heart of the '70s: top-40 fodder like Leo Sayer's "When I Need You" and Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch." Manilow's homey, boy-next-door vocal style personalizes many of these songs. He pays them respect. While a legion of postmodern rock bands has trivialized songs like these with ironic remakes, Manilow covers them with sincerity and heart.
