Many tribute albums feature either tepid retreads of the classics or inappropriate interpretations by acts with little feel for the originals. A TRIBUTE TO JIMMY MARTIN, however, is just the opposite. A labor of love created by some of Martin's closest collaborators, the disc is a collection of sterling songs performed by musicians with top-notch bluegrass pedigrees. On "Ocean of Diamonds," vocalist/guitarist Audie Blaylock does a good job of capturing the relaxed intensity of Martin's exquisitely lonesome-sounding pipes, while Paul Williams plays some especially slippery mandolin. On "There Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone," banjo legend J.D.Crowe provides a virtual master class in driving five-string bluegrass picking. The production here is spare and warm, the performances easy-flowing and vocal-oriented, perfectly capturing Jimmy Martin's radio-friendly "good 'n' country" sound.
