A highly unconventional live album, IN TUNE AND ON TIME presents DJ Shadow (AKA Josh Davis) remixing--and sometimes completely restructuring--his own songs in a 2002 concert performance. Drawing from all of his records, including ENDTRODUCING, THE PRIVATE PRESS, and PSYENCE FICTION (the latter issued under the UNKLE banner), Shadow adds and subtracts from his cut-and-paste sound collages, often inserting elements from one song into another, as on the heavily percussive "Drums of Death" and the melancholy "Lonely Soul." These reconfigured and overlapping compositions reveal both the cohesiveness and expanse of Shadow's own musical universe. The dramatic 10-minute "Blood on the Motorway" blends aspects from the ominous "Celestial Annihilation" and the sullen "Rabbit in Your Headlights," while "Lost & Found," a rarity distinguished by its prominent U2 drum sample, fuses remarkably well with the dreamy "Unreal." Except for Davis's few comments and the occasional bits of crowd noise, IN TUNE AND ON TIME feels like a studio album, essential for any DJ Shadow fan. The release also includes a DVD of the performance, featuring additional tracks.
