Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. Author: Bill Dahl. The derivation of the tracks on BORN WITH THE BLUES is slightly confusing. This 2004 collection takes its title from a 1969 session Memphis Slim cut after he had moved to Paris. Three songs from that recording, including the title cut, are tacked onto the end of this album as bonus cuts. The bulk of the disc is taken up by a straight reissue of WORLD'S FOREMOST BLUES SINGER, a 1961 album Slim released on the small Strand label just before departing for France. Surprisingly, the later tracks bear more of the classic sound of Slim's '40s and '50s work, probably due to the presence of guitarist Lowell Fulson and a Chicago rhythm section. In contrast, the earlier session bears more of a funky, R&B touch, most notably in the playing of Matt "Guitar" Murphy. Regardless, Slim pounds the hell out of his piano on both dates, delivering his wryly observed lyrics with the blend of urbanity and soul that made him a blues legend in the first place.
