Part of Brian Wilson's appeal has always been that, despite the sophistication of his songwriting and production skills, he is the eternal man-child. On GETTING' IN OVER MY HEAD, the 62-year-old ex-Beach Boy has lost neither his childlike innocence nor his knack for crafting pop-perfect mini-symphonies. His first studio recording in six years is closer to the vintage Beach Boys sound than any of his solo work to date, and Wilson's wide-eyed sense of wonder at the beautiful mysteries of the world is fully present. Though some superstar guests pop up (Paul McCartney, Elton John, Eric Clapton), they almost pass unnoticed amid the summery sheen and sonic grandeur of Wilson's sun-dappled vision. Wall-of-sound arrangements? Check. Closely layered sheets of vocal harmony? Check. Winsome, infectious pop melodies? Check.
