Electropop with a human face. Billy Ray Martin's debut album is an interesting hybrid, very much a Eurythmics/Annie Lennox act for the '90s. On the one hand, on most of the tracks here, including the hits "Your Loving Arms" and "Running Around Town," Martin favors the cool synth-driven textures and minor keys of late-'90s dance music, while on others she shows off her big gospel-ish voice--reminscent of Aretha Franklin as well as Lennox--on songs that verge on traditional '60s soul. The title track, for example, is a big, theatrical R&B ballad with what sounds like a huge gospel chorus behind her, while "Imitation of Life" is very effective neo-Motown, complete with a live string section.
