Recording information: 11/12/1944-11/21/1944. Arranger: Arthur Kay & The Originals. Song of Norway was a throwback to the days of operetta when it arrived on Broadway August 21, 1944. It was also in the contemporary tradition of borrowing from the classics to create popular music. George Forrest and Robert Wright took the music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and created the songs with English lyrics. Milton Lazarus adapted his libretto from Homer Curran's fictionalized play about the composer, weaving a romantic triangle involving Grieg (Lawrence Brooks) with Nina (Helena Bliss), his innocent romantic interest, and Louisa Giovanni (Irra Petina), a scheming countess intent on getting him for herself. (Of course, love won out.) The show became a big hit, running 860 performances, and Decca Records contracted for the original Broadway cast album. Unfortunately, Petina was unavailable for the recording, so she was replaced by Kitty Carlisle, who had been doing a series of studio cast albums for Decca and had no trouble stepping into the role of the countess. Spread across seven 78 rpm discs, the album was lavish for its time, with bits of dialogue sprinkled among the songs. The story was hackneyed and the performances occasionally stilted, but Grieg's music, with its wonderful melodies, saved all. ~ William Ruhlmann
