Disproving F. Scott Fitzgerald's claim that there are no second acts in American lives, Mississippi bluesman John Hurt re-emerged in the early 1960s after decades of retirement and obscurity. Rediscovered and embraced by revivalists during the folk boom, Hurt, who had never achieved much renown for his initial recordings in the '20s, became a blues idol in the '60s. The 1963 Library of Congress sessions on these two discs were among several recordings made in a mad dash to document Hurt, who died in '66.
Hurt's graceful, fluid fingerpicking patterns and warm, amiable singing style remained pretty much unchanged from his early recordings. If anything, age had given Hurt's music even more gravitas, giving the feeling of hard-won wisdom being humbly (but brilliantly) dispensed. Hurt's most popular tunes are here ("Candy Man," "Pay Day," etc.), but so are lesser-known delights such as the surreal "Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me," the courtly instrumental "Spanish Flangdang," and the humorous, uncharacteristically bawdy "Funky Butt."
