SELF HELP SERENADE, the debut by Los Angeles-based quartet Marjorie Fair, was originally recorded in 2002, and sat around for a spell before seeing release by EMI in 2005. The album shows no signs of having collected dust, however. Shimmering, finely crafted art-pop that bears the influence of the Beach Boys and the Flaming Lips (while evoking Mercury Rev and Grandaddy at times), Marjorie Fair's music fuses dreamy melodicism, rich sonic detail, and the compelling songwriting and lyrics of frontman Evan Slamka.
Slamka has a sweet, plaintive voice, and the lilting verses of the opener, "Don't Believe," beckon the listener like a siren's song. "Waves," the album's lead-off single, rides a breezy, mid-tempo rhythm while sensuous, reverb-soaked guitars wash gently across the melody, and "Cracks in the Wall" is in country-tinged, melancholic waltz-time. The lazy, ocean-and-sun-dappled sound of SELF HELP SERENADE evokes the California coast, but Slamka's dark, introspective lyrics bring a reflective, moody depth to album's shiny surface. The combined effect makes for a bright, wistful, and immediately alluring listen
