Over the course of more than 20 years, Teena Marie has led a career full of unusual twists and turns. Taken under the wing of Rick James while working for Motown in the late 1970s, this fair-skinned California girl sang soul deeply, vibrantly, and truthfully. After hitting the R&B charts repeatedly, Marie suddenly crossed over to the pop charts with the genre-defying "Lovergirl" in 1984. Two decades later, her comeback record, LA DONA, released on the predominantly hardcore-rap label Cash Money, proved to be both a surprise and a success. LA DONA is mostly vintage Marie--sweet, dark, and sultry. Tracks such as "I'm Still in Love" and "My Body's Hungry" are steeped in the kind of '70s soul perfected by the Delfonics and the Stylistics. Many tracks open with modern hip-hop-flecked beats, as on "Honey Call" or "I Got You" (featuring her mentor James), but a jazzy sort of funk prevails, bringing with it a more timeless quality. Even "Makavelli Never Lied" with its opening calls of "thug life," mixes references to both '90s stars (2Pac and Lauryn Hill) and '70s icons (Marvin Gaye and Chaka Khan). On LA DONA, Teena Marie returns, sounding like she's never been away.

A decade after resorting to starting her own label to release her work, Teena Marie discovered newfound -- or, more likely, regenerated -- respect for her legacy and wound up with a deal on Southern rap label Cash Money (distributed by Universal). Most of La Dona was in the can before the label snapped her up, but not before Cash Money's own Mannie Fresh could contribute some co-production work. Even so, this is a Teena Marie record in every respect, with none of her personality compromised. The average artist who reappears long after his or her most-popular years tends to fail miserably at staying current -- hell, rewind 14 years to the stunted hip-hop elements of Marie's own Ivory -- but she skillfully avoids that trap here. She's in excellent voice, as confident as ever, and most of the material she's working with stands proudly next to her best work. One trap Marie couldn't help but fall down, however, is the curse of the seemingly bottomless album. Equal to the length of two of her '80s albums, it undeniably falls prey to the CD-age trend of cramming as much as possible onto a disc. And La Dona would most definitely have a greater impact if it were knocked down to 40 minutes or so. This issue excepted, Marie's return is nothing short of welcomed. Gerald LeVert, MC Lyte, Common, Baby, and -- of course -- Rick James stop by for support, but none of them are truly needed. ~ Andy Kellman

何と劇的な復活だろう。白人にしては珍しくR&Bド真ん中を歩んできたティーナ・マリー、10年ぶりのニュー・アルバムである。ただ〈復活〉とはいっても、この10年の間にヒップホップ方面からのラヴコールが絶えなかった彼女は、スヌープ・ドッグやイヴなどの作品に客演してきていた。そんなこともあってか、新作はあのキャッシュ・マネーからのリリースとなっている（2年前には同社のサントラ『Undisputed』に参加）。時は経ても、ミディアム～スロウ系の楽曲を中心に泣き濡れた歌声で歌い上げるスタイルは全盛期のまま。ベイビー、MCライト、コモンなどのラッパーたちとさりげなく渡り合えば、ジェラルド・リヴァートとは濃密なデュエットを披露、さらには育ての親であるリック・ジェイムズとも共演するなどトピックも多い。すでにチャート上ではかなりの勢いを振るっている本作。ありがちなヴェテランの惰性作とは違うのだ。
