Like many great soul voices -- including Sam Cooke and Usher -- Luciano comes out of gospel. Unlike most, he comes out of the gospel of Rastafari. On SERIOUS TIMES, Luciano continues to sing songs of praise to Jah ("Alpha & Omega" and "Give Praise"), while expanding his musical vocabulary with a mainstream modern inspirational sound. This tone is best revealed on "Just Talk to God" -- more reminiscent of Michael McDonald than Burning Spear -- and the smooth lovers' rock of "Love Will Make It," featuring the extraordinary harmonies of Morgan Heritage. Then there are the delightful ambiguities of "Only Love" and "This Feeling," which split the difference between love and devotion. Luciano covers "Everybody's Talking" (here called "Echoes of My Mind") in the best reggae tradition of pop adaptations that actually improve on an already good song by giving it "riddim." Rounding out this excellent disc, the title track has the makings of a modern reggae classic.
