An excellent tenor and alto saxophonist whose flexible style ranges from swing to bop and hard bop, Carmen Leggio has always deserved much greater recognition. This single CD has all of the music from what were probably Leggio's two finest recordings as a leader. Although there is solo space for pianists Derek Smith and John Bunch plus the two bassists and drummers, Leggio is the obvious star throughout. He displays plenty of energy, constantly pushes himself, and swings hard on both tenor and alto. Some of these performances border on the explosive. Highlights include "Broadway," the blues "Okay Bug," Leggio's boppish original "Hinchcliffs," "Nagasaki," "In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town," and "Lover." But in reality every selection (including the warm renditions of ballads) is well-worth hearing by fans of both swing and bop saxophonists. ~ Scott Yanow
