Dynarec's productions have come so close to invoking the sound of sovereign electro-techno veterans Drexciya (and all its many offshoots) that many have wondered whether or not the alias is writing yet another chapter for the Detroit techno history books. The Netherlands' Delsin camp has had definite ties to the Motor City in the past (and that's not limited to their release of Keith Tucker's Optic Nerve project), but they deny Dynarec's connection to anything Drexciya-related. Regardless of who's behind it and where he/she/they originate, User Input sits alongside Claro Intelecto's Neurofibro as another album released in 2004 that should satisfy just about anyone with an endless craving for icebox-cold electro -- as long as those people aren't demanding broadscale originality. One key thing that these tracks lack in comparison to those made by the pioneers is that sense of gracefulness beyond all the hard electronics; the driving "Primary Colour" and relatively stately "Mind to Body" are key exceptions where the stiffness is tempered by warmer chords and a keen use of space. This might not be a problem for some, who will see it as more of a trait than a flaw. Besides, Dynarec should hardly be embarrassed by being confused with their primary inspiration. Note: A compilation of the three 12" EPs that predate this (all released on Delsin) would make for another substantial album, even if it wouldn't quite have the uniformity or consistency of this release. ~ Andy Kellman|
