Caribbean music has always been interwoven with soul music. St. Thomas native Kevin Lyttle was raised with a love for both of these worlds separately, but he brings them together in a wholly unique way on his self-titled debut. Upon the album's 2004 release, the young singer--who possesses a malleable, organic, incredibly seductive tenor somewhere between Sean Paul and Roger Troutman--was already ruling the pop and R&B charts with the infectious dance jam "Turn Me On", a natural for summer radio with its chants, breakdowns, and relentless pulse.
Much of the remaining record captures the spirit of that hit, particularly the energetic "Last Drop" and "I Got It", both of which feature the growl of Spragga Benz. However, Lyttle proves he's truly at his best when he slows the tempo down to a sensual crawl, particularly on his mesmerising re-imagining of Terence Trent D'Arby's 1988 hit "Sign Your Name". Lyttle finds the perfect balance of dance and bewitchment on the sweaty room-shaker "Dance Like Making Love". On this album, Lyttle proves he knows how to start a party and slow it down to a libidinous roar, making for a promising first outing, indeed.|
